The 4.2 km long Children’s Railway, the first of its kind in former Czechoslovakia, runs through the lovely Čermeľ valley at the outskirts of Košice, stopping at three places – Čermeľ, Vpred and Alpinka. Its construction began on 17 April 1955 and the railway was completed a year later, on 1 May, without using any machinery. The U36,003 steam locomotive called Katka , built in 1884 by the Hagans factory in Erfurt, Germany, was newly restored in July 1991. The season always begins on 1 May, during the Days of Košice, commemorating the long and captivating history of steam engines, so popular with the visitors.
