Divadlo vzniklo v r. 1957 pod názvom Štátne bábkové divadlo. V súčasnosti patrí do zriaďovateľskej pôsobnosti Bratislavského samosprávneho kraja, preto bolo premenované na Bratislavské bábkové divadlo.
